Awakening

Opening the circle for this month’s dispatch.

January sits in the quiet fold. Winter has set in. Much of the natural world is asleep — but the daylight is growing. A harbinger of the waking up that’s to come.

This is the season of the in-between. Not the deep descent of December, and not yet the thaw. It is the pause where nothing looks like it’s happening, yet something is quietly rearranging itself beneath the surface. Roots deepen. Seeds listen. The body learns how to rest without disappearing.

There is a particular kind of magic in this stillness. It asks less of us than the months ahead will. It does not demand clarity, productivity, or reinvention. It simply asks us to notice — the way the light lingers a moment longer in the afternoon, the way our thoughts soften when we stop forcing answers, the way desire stirs before it has words.

If there is a practice for January, it is this: stay with what is unfinished. Let ideas remain half-formed. Let questions echo without resolution. This is not a time for pushing forward, but for listening closely to what wants to emerge when the world is quiet enough to hear it.

We open this circle in The Between — honouring the pause, the breath held gently, the subtle turning of the year toward its next becoming.

What we’ve been brewing in the cauldron…

The last few weeks have been quieter than they appear from the outside. Much of my time has been spent in the unseen rooms of the work — researching potential guests, recording and editing special episodes, and sitting with ideas as they take their proper shape.

I’ve also been deep in study and planning: writing the upcoming column for Raven Tongue magazine, and slowly, carefully building the foundations for a course through Obsidian Academy. This kind of work doesn’t announce itself. There are no obvious milestones, no clean “before and after.” Just notes, outlines, revisions, and long walks where something finally clicks.

The dark months don’t lend themselves to spectacle but to refinement. To asking better questions. To choosing what deserves more attention before the year begins to accelerate on its own.

So if things feel quieter here, that’s by design. This is the part of the cycle where the hearth stays lit, the doors remain mostly closed, and the real work happens in conversation with patience.
