Opening the circle for this month’s dispatch.

October’s approach pulls us toward the darkened veil — not in costume and plastic cobwebs, but in the deeper rhythm beneath. Across the world, this season has always been a time to honour thresholds: life and death, seen and unseen, the ones who remain and the ones who have slipped beyond our reach.

In Mexico, families prepare altars for Día de los Muertos, offering food, flowers, and stories to welcome their dead back home. In parts of Europe, Samhain marked the Celtic New Year, when fires were lit to guide spirits and ward off mischief. In the Christian calendar, All Hallows’ Eve and All Souls’ Day carry forward rituals of remembrance. In Japan, the Obon festival (though held in summer) echoes this same reverence — lanterns drifting on rivers, carrying prayers to the ancestors.

These rituals remind us that the “spooky” season isn’t about fear. It’s about connection. It’s about remembering that the invisible is just as real as the visible, and that our lives are richer when we carry our beloved dead into the present with us.

Set aside a night this month where you light a single candle. Speak the name of someone you miss, or someone whose courage you wish to carry. Sit for a moment in the glow, breathing in the knowing that you are never truly separate — you are part of a lineage, both seen and unseen. Let this flame remind you: the untamed spirit is never extinguished.

We’ve launched The Untamed on our YouTube channel — a new series dedicated to historically “difficult” people. The first episode tells the story of Métis trader Sophie Morigeau, who lived in the 1800s in what is now Southeastern British Columbia. Against all societal norms of her time, Sophie became an independent landowner and businesswoman, carving her own place in history.

In the membership area, you’ll also find new voice-read stories, available exclusively in After Midnight. These are fictional stories - some spooky, some sultry, some perfect to put you to sleep. They’re meant to be savored like a secret whispered after dark. Consider them my little midnight offerings, just for you.
